Your lawn mower is probably safely stored away for the winter, and no doubt the absence of the regular lawn
Before we start, it is worth mentioning that listening to music while mowing the lawn should not be done without caution. Use ear protection combined with earphones at a lower volume rather than blasting your eardrums. It is sensible to use earmuffs when operating a lawn mower in any case, and you should pay close attention to what is going on around you, especially if there are people present nearby. Lawn mowers are involved in thousands of accidents every year, and often these are the result of inattention by the operator. Watch out more carefully for children and keep looking around you to make sure you are aware of any hazards that you might not hear.
We would start off with that folk classic ‘Combine Harvester’ by The Wurzels. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but there is no denying that the jaunty tune and catchy lyrics will get you fired up and in the mood for mowing the lawn. If indeed you have purchased a brand new lawn mower then this is the perfect tune to start proceedings with, and if you get bored of mowing the grass then you can always give the key to someone else!
This might inspire you to put on a few singalong tracks, and why not? If you can’t sing very well then it doesn’t matter as no-one will hear you over the noise of the mower, just be aware that when you stop the engine you’ll be heard loud and clear! Classic singalong tracks include almost anything by The Beatles or Neil Diamond, or perhaps something from your new favourite band?
If this hasn’t got the blood flowing then Jon Barker’s ‘Lawnmower Man’ should do the trick. A rootsy jazz number, this song has all the hallmarks of a big band number but the lyrics belie the powerful nature of the music; the track was penned as a comedic nod to the weekly garden chore and the sense of elation when the weather takes a bad turn and the lawn mower must stay in the shed for another week. The lyrics evoke the drudgery of the necessary chore and the sense of satisfaction when the job is finally done. Of course, at the end of the song it starts to rain, but not until after the lawn mower has done its job.
The midnight rain dance was a whole waste of time,
I can’t squeeze into my shorts any slower,
Because I know I’ve got a date to face my garden with my mower.
Gotta mow the lawn!
I gotta mow the lawn!
……
Lawnmower man on his trusty steed,
Lawnmower man full of grace and speed,
I don’t give a damn,
When I’m lawnmower man.”
