Ball Bearing
Wheels – These are wheels fitted with internal ball bearings designed
to decrease friction and increase efficiency, while also making the wheels run
smoother for longer periods of time.
Blade Brake – A safety mechanism which will stop the machines blades from moving without having the need to switch off the engine.
Collection Bag – This is the bag for which the grass clippings will go into when mowing the lawn.
Cut and Drop – A straightforward mowing function where blades of grass are cut and deposited back onto your lawn.
Cutting Deck – The main body of the lawnmower that surrounds the blade and its subsequent cutting action. Also sometimes referred to as the ‘chassis’ of the lawnmower.
Cutting Height – The height above the soil line that the blades will cut to. This is often adjustable on most lawnmowers available to purchase.
Cutting Height Adjustment – A system by which you can raise/lower the deck to alter the length of your cut. Usually mechanical, it is generally operated by levers. These come in a variety of methods, including individual levers for each wheel, one for the front and back or even a central lever.
Cutting Width – This refers to the width of cut created by the blade situated in the cutting deck.
Drive System – The method of propulsion for a lawnmower. This can vary from push/manual lawnmowers to self-propelled models. Also, the drives can be anything from single speed to multi-geared variable speed and even non-gear change hydrostatic drives with unlimited speed control.
Grass Comb – A series of grooves and ridges built into the front underside of a rotary lawnmower’s cutting deck that separates each blade and straightens them also for a better final cut.
Lawn Aerator – Process of using hollow spikes to creating holes in your lawn to allow air and moisture to reach the roots of the grass.
Lawn Scarifier – Removes moss and thatch from your lawns to allow air and moisture to reach the roots of the grass.
Mulching – A system of cutting where the discharge channel is shut down and the blades keep cutting the grass clippings until they are miniscule. After this, they are deposited onto the lawn where they act as mulch, acting as a good fertiliser.
Mulch Plug – This is part of the mulching kit that comes with some lawnmowers, which enables the mulching process to work. It pushes into the discharge channel at the rear, which stops the grass clippings from entering the collector.
Push – One type of lawnmower where your walking propels the mower and the engine is the only source of power for cutting the lawn.
Rear Discharge – This is whereby the grass clippings are thrown out the rear of the machine, either into the grass collector or onto the lawn.
Recoil – A common way of starting a lawnmower engine. It involves pulling a starting chord, generally located on the handle of most lawnmowers.
Scalping – This is when the lawn is cut too short and is most common around the edges of them. Common indicators include grass discolouration, grass thinning and weed takeover.
Self-Propelled – A type of lawnmower whereby the engine powers the blades and the wheels.
Side Discharge – This is where the side channel distributes the grass to the side of the lawnmower.
Turf Protecting Wheels – These are predominantly extra-wide patterned wheels that evenly distributes the weight of the lawnmower as much as it can.Â
